Frequently asked Questions

Question:  What do therapists’ job titles mean?

Answer:  Fully qualified family therapists may also be called ‘Family and Systemic Psychotherapists’. This title is reserved for professionals who have completed high level, AFT accredited training and who are registered with the UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy). Therapists must evidence high standards of practice and continuous learning to maintain their UKCP registration. Please see AFT’s

Therapist Directory for a list of all UKCP registered Family and Systemic Psychotherapists

Question: Will what I say be kept confidential?

Answer: Family therapist will keep the contents of your session confidential UNLESS a vulnerable adult, child or young person is identified as being at risk of harm. If this situation occurs your therapist will discuss with you what information is going to be shared with other professionals in order to protect the vulnerable adult or child from harm. Family Therapists won’t talk about you to other people or professionals unless you give us your permission to share information with them for example to make a referral to a specialist.

Question:  What if I have more questions?

Answer:  You are likely to have more questions specific to your circumstances. You may wish to enquire about the therapist’s professional experience and training, the session fee and booking arrangements. These are important matters and your family therapist will be happy to discuss them with you when you talk to her.
